Decorating Ideas for Reading Area With Gray Floors

Gray floors are amazing because they go with pretty much every color of the spectrum. They are the perfect blend of neutral and a splash of color. But, if this is your first time decorating a home, you might not know how to style them at first.

If that's the case, you've come to the right place. I'm going to share some of my best design tips and tricks. We're also going to see which colors work best with your gray floors and which ones you should stay away from.

Wall Color Ideas

Now, I first wanted to start with wall colors because that's going to set the mood for your entire home. I'm going to share some of my color ideas, and we're going to go through them one room at a time.

Kitchen

We're going to start with the kitchen first because it's one of the most difficult rooms to coordinate. Not only do you have to consider the wall color, but also your appliances and cupboards.

For your kitchen, I would recommend going for a blue color palette. What's great about using blue is that you can go both light and dark. You can go for a light wash of blue, something like turquoise or teal, or you can go dark and paint your walls navy.

By going with a lighter color, your kitchen will seem bigger and more spacious. But, if you paint your walls a dark navy color, it's going to look modern and edgy. At the end of the day, it's all about what effect you're going for.

Living Room

Your living room is one of the first things your guests are going to notice when they walk in. Now, for the living room, there are two ways you can go — completely monochrome or a splash of color.

If you love that contemporary look, you can paint your walls a beautiful shade of white. But, if you don't know which shade to go for, you can check out this link to get inspired.

On the other hand, if you want to incorporate some colors into your living room, I suggest warmer tones. You can pick and choose between different shades of yellow or orange. What's more, if you don't want to commit to just one color, you can even do an accent wall.

Bedroom

Your bedroom is the most personal space in your home. It is a place where you can let go of your worries and relax. So, choosing the right color for it is key. Depending on the kind of vibe you're going for, there are a couple of colors you can incorporate.

First, you can go for something warm, like a blush pink or light yellow. Painting your bedroom in a warm tone will make it feel more inviting. On the other hand, you can also try a more neutral palette, like beige or white.

But, if you're feeling really bold, you can even paint your walls slate gray or black. If you do decide to go a bit darker with your walls, make sure you choose some lighter furniture pieces and accessories to balance everything out.

Furniture Ideas

A kitchen with a gray floor and white furniture.

Now that you're an expert on color-coordination and painting your walls, let's talk about some furniture ideas.

Kitchen

Since gray is such a versatile color, you could install any kind of cabinets and they would look amazing. But, if you go want to go for a timeless look, consider white cabinets.

White cabinets work with any floor and wall color, so you don't have to worry about coordinating. But, if you want to go for something a bit different, light wood cabinets will do the trick. Once again, they will work with any wall color.

If you are feeling adventurous and love that dark, edgy vibe, why not match your floors to your cabinets? Having dark gray elements in your kitchen will make it feel more modern. But, if you decide to go this route, just make sure your wall color is a bit lighter and consider using an off-white or light blue.

Dining Room

Since your dining room is an extension of your kitchen, I wanted to include some furniture ideas here, too. The easiest option for designing your dining room is to try and match the colors to your kitchen cabinets.

For example, if you've gone for a light wood for your cabinets, consider buying a dining table in the same color. But, if you want to add a splash of color, you can get creative with your chairs. You can buy chairs that are one solid color, or you can experiment with some fun patterns and textures.

Living Room

Now, designing your living room can be pretty tricky because there are so many options to choose from. You can go light, dark, or colorful, depending on what kind of aesthetic you're going for.

If you have white walls and gray flooring, you can get creative with your furniture and add some pops of color. I recommend getting a couch in a more neutral tone, like gray or beige and adding a fun-colored chair or different accessories as your accents.

But, if you've painted your walls a darker color, you need to bring in some brightness to your room with lighter furniture. Also, if you love a more modern, contemporary look, you can get all-white furniture for your living room.

On the other hand, if you've painted a fun accent wall or have wallpaper in your living room, you should coordinate the furniture with that. You can also add a mirrored credenza or coffee table that will help reflect some light in your room.

Bedroom

If you want your bedroom to be an oasis of peace, you have to be really careful when you're picking out furniture. One of my favorite ideas for keeping your bedroom neutral is layering different shades of gray.

For example, if your floors are dark gray, you can go for a light-colored bed frame and bedside table. By keeping your color palette neutral, you can have some fun with different lighting fixtures and accessories.

Lighting Ideas

Since gray floors tend to absorb natural light instead of reflecting it, what kind of lighting you put inside your home is key. Now, let's take a look at some lighting ideas that will help inspire you.

Living Room

Before you scatter a few random lamps around your living room, consider what kind of vibe you're going for. Also, do you want just some ambient lighting, or do you need it to be bright and focused?

If you just need some ambient lighting, you can go for:

  • Spot-lights
  • Up-lights
  • Accent lamps

Now, if you are working with a smaller space, I would avoid using standing lamps because they can take up a lot of valuable space. Instead, you can do a central light fixture or get some pendant lights and table lamps.

Another thing to consider is that the color and brightness of your lightbulb will set the overall mood of your room. My recommendation would be to mix and match different lighting fixtures and figure out what works best for your space.

Bedroom

When it comes to your bedroom, it's all about ambient lighting. What kind of light fixtures you choose is as important as your bedding and furniture so don't make it an afterthought.

If you have a spacious bedroom, you should experiment with different light sources. By adding some delicate pendant lights and bedside lamps, you'll get a combination of functionality with glamour.

Accessories

Plants and gray floor.

Different accessories around your home can really pull the whole look together. Now, let me show you some of my ideas for accessories and how to work them into any home.

Throw Pillows

If you've decided to go for a monochrome look, throw pillows could add a much-needed pop of color to your home. What's more, you can mix and match different colors, patterns, and textures to give it an eclectic look.

Greenery

Adding some floral arrangements or houseplants will give your room and home some life and light. Also, if you put flowers in a fun-looking vase, it will help you achieve a modern design.

But, I would recommend only putting them in your living room. Because they collect a lot of dust, putting plants in your bedroom might not be a good idea.

Mirrors

Similar to lighting fixtures, a couple of mirrors scattered around your home can help you attract some light into your home. Not only that, but if you put them in a few strategic places, they could help make your room feel a bit bigger.

Candles

Candles are a cheap and easy way to make your home seem more relaxing. You can put them all around your home and change them as the seasons come.  But, be careful not to put them somewhere you or your guests can lean into them.

Something Personal

Now, the most important thing when decorating your home is that it reflects your personality and who you are. Sleek, metallic picture frames will provide a great contrast to your floors and make your home feel cozier.

Bottom Line

These are some of my ideas on how to match your wall colors and furniture with gray floors. When it comes to gray floors, the two best options are to go either monochromatic or with pops of color.

Also, since they absorb so much light, think about adding some fun lighting fixtures and accessories. By adding a few mirrors and pendant lights, your home will feel more spacious and glamorous.

In my opinion, interior design is an extremely personal experience, and nobody's going to get it right on their first time. The most important thing is to have fun with it and try to experiment with different colors and patterns.
